Awareness—First Step to a Sustainable Energy Future

A student campaign to increase awareness of how we all use energy — and first step toward a sustianable energy future.
Student produced PowerPoint and Family-Feud type Game supported the school's participation in the Lights Out Canada Campiagn.
Time Required: There was a committee that worked on this from the schools sustainability club. The committee worked on the project a few hours a week over the course of a month, including recording, editing and planning.

Teaching Process
Students made a short video that would be shown to the entire school body discussing steps that they can take at home to reduce their energy consumption. The video was supported by the inclusion of short powerpoint presentations that provided an introduction and rational for the schools participation in the Lights out Canada project. Students also prepared a few Family Feud based games to engage students in reflecting about their own energy consumption.

Students were asked to participate in the school wide program regarding energy and sustainability through the Lights Out Canada program. The members of the committee gathered and spent their initial meeting brainstorming ideas regarding what they could assemble and produce over the course of the month. The students were given the opportunity to produce materials that would require 30 minutes of student participation during the school assembly. The ideas that emerged included a video production, family feud based game as well as powerpoint presentation.
Assessment/Evaluation
This was a non-credit activity. Students were to share their understandings regarding energy consumption to their peers at a school wide assembly.
