Fracking- Marcellus Shale
Description

This module is entitled 'Fracking - Marcellus Shale (Pilot)' and introduces students to the controversial topic of hyrdraulic fracturing. After reading through the scenario and using the additional resources provided, students complete investigations to further their understanding and consolidate their knowledge. The list of investigations and their difficulty is listed below and can be found in the Fracking Module link.
The NASA Global Climate Change Education/Earth Science Education Alliance (ESSEA) modules include situations, connections to the standards, resources and sample investigations. Unless labeled K-4, the modules can be adapted for middle and high school students.
Investigations:
- Energy flow and fossil fuels (beginner)
- Fossil fuels: natural gas (beginner)
- Natural Gas and the Marcellus Shale (advanced)
- Economics and Emissions (intermediate)
- Hydraulic Fracturing (intermediate)
- The role of the atmosphere and greenhouse effect in determining the surface temperature of the Earth (intermediate).
- Marcellus Shale: Natural Gas Energy Resource Guide (intermediate)
- Teaching energy sources and the environment together- what is Marcellus Shale? (beginner).
- Trends in Atmospheric Methane Concentrations (beginner).
