Graph our Litter
Description
Students examine their schoolyard for litter and graph its spread. Using TIGed Collaborations, your students can share their results with other students around the world and discuss what the causes might be for any differences.
Time Required: 40 minutes per day over a sufficient period of time to collect data (3-5 days)
Learning Objectives
- Students will build awareness around the increasing concern of littering pollution and the environment
- Students explore how it is possible to track that amount of litter in a set area
- Using technology, transfer their findings into spreadsheets and graphs to share with the school population
Teaching Process
1. Students form small groups and get them to take a notepad and pen or pencil with them outside where you assign different sections of the school to each group.
2. In that particular section, have them count and write down how many pieces of glass, paper, and litter they can find.
3. When sufficient data is collected after a set period, have them import the data that they have collected into a spreadsheet program and later on get them to graph their results. They can share their results with the class.
4. Make connections to global issues that relate to pollution in different countries. What sorts of environmental policies, rules, regulations are in place to help keep the environment clean and sustainable? Have each student submit their response through the student writing section of your TIGed virtual classroom.
Teachers Notes
This activity is perfect for collaboration. Find another class, using the Collaboration Discussion Forums , with whom to work together, and have your students share their results with each other. Discuss the difference between regions and the potential underlying causes.

Clipboards and graphing paper, rubber gloves, garbage bags, computer access and a spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel or Create a Graph
