Bring Back the Wild: Grade 1 Unit Plan
Description
This unit is designed to help teach your students about biodiversity in a cross curricular approach. Specifically, there are three lesson plans available that will help teach strands within the Science and Language curriculum. The lesson plan overviews are below and it is recommended that they be implemented in the order they are presented as each lesson builds from one another. This unit is classroom-ready and requires little to no background or research on your part. Pre-assessments, objectives, ministry expectations and rubrics are provided for your convenience to ensure this unit can be easily taught.

Teaching Process
Lesson One:
The focus of this lesson is to activate students’ prior knowledge and introduce the unit through discussion. During the lesson the teacher will use a number of informational texts to facilitate discussion about the basic necessities of living things (Food/Water, Shelter, Interaction with other species, Reproduction and Protection). During the discussion the teacher will develop an Anchor Chart, Grid and/or Venn Diagram to serve as a reminder of these important factors as the students’ progress through the unit.
Lesson Two:
Using the completed Anchor Chart/Grid/Venn Diagram from the previous lesson, the
teacher leads a class demonstration on the dependence of species on one another in an ecosystem. Using pictures of species on the bulletin board the teacher will demonstrate how to map the interconnectedness of these species on one another. The students will be provided a template which would allow them the opportunity to create a simple ecosystem map, which depicts how a number of species are reliant on one another for survival. The teacher will use this work to assess student understanding of the concepts taught in previous lessons.
Lesson Three:
Using the completed maps from the previous lesson the teacher will then ask the students to think about what would happen if a single organism disappeared. Using the student examples, the teacher would lead a discussion about the importance of preserving wildlife and how the students could be part of that.
