The Critical Hope  teaching manual is a 94 page environmental education workshop package which includes almost 30 group or classroom activities and support material.  Coming out of Master’s work at the Faculty of Environmental Science, York University these activities are framed as possible workshop material (and sample workshop schedules are provided), but the Manual is just as useful to teachers in the formal education setting. 

Exploring three themes – What is Environmentalism?  Environmental Identity and Hope in Environmentalism – the manual tackles successfully a key challenge in the environmental education field: How to give hope to young people when they are learning about and dealing with the dire issue of the state of the world.

Classroom activities are grouped into the following categories:

- Experiential activities

- Reporting back to the group

- Continuing the process

- Check in and feedback

The manual also includes an extensive bibliography – much of it annotated.
